Independent Play

Early Ed people, is this what you call playing in your room??? :) I want Kirkley to start learning to play some on her own, enjoying her room and zillions of toys. I kid-proofed her room this morning: hid all electronics, filled the cabinets with toys, put out a basket of board books, plugged in a CD player with kid songs, and then...put up a baby gate in the doorway so that she can play sometimes. That last idea was the least popular idea according to Kirkley. Music was the best idea as shown by the clapping baby seen below.

So we're starting with small amounts of time, I'm playing in there with her then leaving her for a minute or two, listening intensely to the monitor, and seeing what happens. Anyone done this? Any tips other than tough it out?? She didn't totally hate it, but she's not in love yet. I thought I'd have a great before and after picture of the toy explosion, but she really just got a few toys and a few books out. The quiet times were her eating out of her snack trap instead of playing! We'll keep trying!

Music is always the best decision.

sounds like you're doing great!:) she needs to be able to play by herself, so keep at it...put toys in there that she's familiar with and has played with before so that she knows HOW to play with them and can enjoy them...maybe intro a new toy every now and then and put it in there once she gets it and has played with you with it...sometimes too many toys can overstimulate and just leave her lost to know what to do...a few that she's really familiar with will probably work better, but that's not written in stone:)mary evans plays by herself a good bit, and it's great! i do the same thing with her room and the gate...she's usually sitting in her rocking chair looking at books, so i would recommend keeping those out! good luck!

Jacks has started doing this on his own, mostly. I think she'll get more into it when she is walking better - so she can make the choice to go to her room on her own.

Update on this so no one thinks I'm terrible -- I did just post about thinking the dr was unnecessary! We played her room together forever after her nap. She loved grabbing books out for us to read and picked up another animal sound (monkey = ee! ee!). I'd leave for a minunte to let her be for a second then come back and play again. Most of all, I want her comfortable in her room -- it's never been kidproof so we've only used it for sleeping/chaging. I'm trying to get her comfortable in there, show her where toys/books are, etc. So, no, I did not just drop her over the gate and wish her a good time! :)
